Refuse

Jacqueline Sheridan

Sometimes

I’d love to

simply refuse

To fully embody

the pouting

fiery child

Flopped to the floor

Wailing, wild and

wilful in the

need to

stop being good

To stop following

the rules

Even the helpful ones

And to dig in the heels

of blind resistance

to anything or anyone

who tries to move me

No

I will not go

I do not care

I am claiming my right

to refuse

So there.

Surprisingly

This releases my breath

Spits something out

And I find myself

Free again

To let the world in

Oh how I need her

Come visit more often

I'll do my best

to let you in.
